ABOUT THE RESERVE


Reserve was organized by the decision of the Soviet of People's Commissars on 31 December, 1931, and had the area of 31.937 hectares. Main goals of its organization where the following: Central Forest reserve was established for preserving of typical forest associations and animals of the central forest region, and also for scientific research of wild nature and animals, which should benefit to economical, scientific and cultural development of the USSR.
In 1985, Central Forest reserve was included into the UNESCO international network of the biosphere reserves.
Now one of the main goals of the reserve is the global background monitoring, because it was defined as representative area of the southern taiga of Eastern Europe due to the low levels of nature pollution.
Now the area of the reserve is 24.415 hectares.
